Question 2 - Evaluation

Script:

Question 2
How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

All of our products we produced are effective to help create appreciation and acknowledgment for our artist KYKO and help boost his brand image and popularity. The whole promotional package is providing convergence and it is all for the benefit of the audience. We created a visual music promo for our audience to enjoy and watch and offering other alternatives such as the digi-pak and the music poster gives the audience other things to enjoy.

All the 3 texts we had to create are part of a promotional package and the purpose of all 3 is to increase sales for artist and they are ways of portraying different types of media convergence as this refers to two media texts coming together to make a package which is what we created. We created a digital music promo with a music poster and digi-pak the other two texts which we created to make a promotional package which is a sign of convergence. The point of using convergence is to increase sales and popularity for artists and it was important that we made this promotional package and to the best of our ability. Convergence increases sales because there is more to offer and for our audience to look at. They have the music promo which they can refer to and create links to but also the ancillary tasks help massively. The music poster is essential because audience members can buy this and see the artist in details and conventions of a music promo is having tour dates on them which help audience know when tours are available for tickets and also they can place the music poster on their bedroom walls. The digi-pak also gives the audience a chance to buy an album and listen to the song but also a digi-pak also offers information about the artist/band so we had to use these conventions in our digi-pak to give ourselves the chance to get a very good grade.

With the whole promotional package will mean that synergy will exist within the package, synergy means when two businesses work collaboratively to promote their products, by co-operating the products are more successful than if the businesses worked alone. An example of synergy in the music world would be music artists working with producers that can promote their artists and raising popularity. Also another important aspect for bands/artist is merchandise which the music poster can come under and creating merchandise is helpful for sales and popularity by working with companies who can create this merchandise.

In our task we had to create the promotional package and there had to be synergetic links and I feel we included this very well in our promotional package. The package help promote one another because of the landscape and location choices for all 3 texts. The digi-pak and poster have very effective scenic shots which show roads/tracks within them and helps create a message about the use of the tracks and will attract the target audience to watch the music promo to understand the images. Also the use of the characters was another good idea of ours to use on the digi-pak and poster as the title is called animals and there is only one animal out of 3 characters. This creates questions about how can it be about animals and will excite the audience to watch to understand the narrative and images. Another effective factor of our work was the use of the same titles throughout and this was used as from our research we found that bands/artist rarely ever change the titles on poster and digi-paks as it all counts towards brand image and the effectiveness around this is that it helps the audience automatically recognise the band/artist from the typography.

Through our narrative we tried to make our audience feel as though they were close to the character; this was done by using the same location for the characters in the music promo and the main artist in the music promo. The message behind this is showing the closeness and it helps create a message about similarities about the characters and the artist and the whole aim of our music promo was for our audience to put themselves in the situations of the characters. Our music video isn’t very serious as we used the gorilla which is visually pleasing to watch but the deeper and serious meaning behind the narrative is important. The Indie Pop genre explores the darker side of love and reflects problems that go on in the world for the target audience and we wanted to show this in our promo. We portrayed this through the characters in our promos being in unfamiliar territory and we also tried to make the businessman look scruffy, the message behind this will reflect the stress and problems our target audience may be experience at a stressful stage in their lives. The journey of them getting back on track and in familiar territory is explaining an important message, that no matter what troubles they may experience they can pull through them and sort themselves out and the use of similar/locations for the main artist and characters provides reassurance and closeness to the audience that they aren’t alone in those troubles experienced whatever they may be.

The point of talking about that is important as it helps provide the link and meaning behind the images used for our digi-pak and music poster. The important aspect in the whole narrative explanation above is the use of similar locations for all involved and we wanted to ensure this was similar in our promotional package throughout. From all the 3 texts you can see we have used similar images of landscape shots and the importance of this is to reflect our artist and is also conventional of our genre, it reveals a sense of nature and reflects the main artist. Many artists in the music industry are quite fake now and don’t put over their true personalities and the use of naturalistic images to represent our artists provides a message over his personality and that he defies the majority of the music industry but adheres his genre of music. Also another factor to use these images and locations was of course because of the title of the song, animals is associated with these locations, they are open spaces which reflect the wild and this is another factor behind the use of images.

The images and typography that we used were the ways we created links between all of the 3 products. The images with the use of landscaping images were on link we created. We tried to create a naturalistic look as the song refers to animals and running wild which creates messages about a naturalistic look so we wanted to have that link with the lyrics and in all 3 products. For the digi-pak and music advert poster we used different images of landscape and this was to provide images and locations that exist within our music promo, this attracts the audience as they get an understanding of the narrative and locations but also provides the naturalistic link between the promotional package. This is effective as the natural look is a convention of our chosen genre as when we carried out our research we found that Indie Pop subverts the conventions of Pop with the fake look portrayed through make up and location is stayed away from. The whole natural convention is important for Indie Pop because it is all used to create a link with the audience. The typography was also used effectively as we used the same titles such as the same font and style throughout all 3 products. This is effective and useful as it helps with brand identity and allows our audience to easily recognise us from the simple title. This will help audience members identify other products if they've only seen one or two products and easily recognisable from a simple piece of text.

This is an example of an Indie Pop/alternative group’s digi-pak and magazine advert and they have adhered the conventions I have just spoken about with the same typography and also the images used are the same. The whole point of this is to create a link between each product so that the audience know how to link them all together. They have created this through the typography with the same font and style being used for both pieces of work which helps with the brand recognition and allows the audience to instantly know who they are and what the album is.

The exhibition part of the music industry is important for every single band/artists and we have exported our music promo under new media ways by offering it on YouTube to be able to stream. This is an effective ways and a positive factor new media has over traditional media techniques. This is because in the past music promos were view on TV channels such as MTV which was a music channel that showed none stop music promos 24/7. Although the industry has changed and promos are streamed from YouTube and this is an effective way to view promos as audience members can view whatever promo they like and not have to wait for a specific promo on a TV channel, shows the benefits of new media techniques. This may all sound brilliant for the new media techniques but the new techniques are hampering the effectiveness of digi-pak and the magazine poster. This is because the new media techniques are meaning digi-pak are digitally downloaded and people now start to ignore the specialty of a digi-pak and the importance of a digi-pak is becoming extinct.

When looking at our 3 texts all individually they are very effective but as a whole they work very well as a promotional package and I feel they look very professional all together and would be effective for increase sales and recognition. Our music video was a success although one weakness that I would say we would aim to improve if we did it again and dedicate the film around narrative. I feel the narrative is difficult to understand for some people and I feel we could have made the narrative a bit clearer and have a better relationship between the businessman and the gorilla and I feel we would have nailed the narrative and got a very successful music promo. As for the music poster I feel it is a very professional looking poster from the titles and images but I feel it wouldn’t be a very successful poster if it didn’t have the synergetic links and I feel this is the same with the digi-pak. They are unclear from the images and without being all as a package they wouldn’t be as strong being individual texts.

Vox Pop on rough edit

This is our Vox Pop for our rough edit (first cut) of our music promo. The reason for doing this Vox Pop was to receive feedback on our first edit and to obtain improvements from a number of different people point of view to help us improve the music promo to help us achieve the best music promo we could possibly produce. We took into consideration what our audience had to say and made the required changes to ensure we pleased our audience.

Did you enjoy our music video?

Luke - 'Yeah I really enjoyed it, it kept me interested throughout the whole music video'

George - 'Yes'

Callum - 'Yeah I did enjoy the music video'

From this question we understood that we'd created a good music promo for our first rough edit and people liked it and we knew we were on the right tracks for achieving a good grade.

Did you understand our narrative? Was it clear?

Luke - 'Yes I understood the narrative between the businessman and the gorilla, I understood that'

George - 'Yeah I got the narrative between the businessman and gorilla it was quite clear what was going on. They switched lives'

Callum - 'I did understand the narrative of how the gorilla and busniessmans lives were contrasting with each other'

This question helped us again understand how far we had come and that we had done enough shooting and editing was going well that our narrative was well on it's way to looking impressive.

What would you say we did well in our music video?

Luke - 'I think it was very unique and interesting, something never seen before which kept it engaging'

George - 'I like the editing and the cutting to the beat was good'

Callum - 'I really liked how unique the narrative was'

This next question helped us understand what we had done well and what we could less focus on and turn our focus to other things that needed tweaking to get a solid grade.

What would you recommend we improve?

Luke - 'More cutting to the beat as it would boost your grade even higher'

George - 'Maybe even more cutting to the beat'

Callum - 'Narrative could be a little more clearer so other audiences can understand what's going on'

This would be our most important question, this is asking our audience for help and advice to achieve higher grades and make the music promo look as professional as it possibly can. What we took from this question was that we needed to work harder at the cutting to the beat and include more cuts to the beat and also tweak the narrative a little more to really help boost our grade higher. We will act upon this advice and ensure they have been worked upon before releasing our final and finished production.

Poll on ancillary poster ideas

We asked a total of 15 different individuals in order to get a conclusive result on which poster design would be most effective in attracting our specific target audience. We had used this poll and targeted our main audience of mid teens to late 20 year olds. From the result shown, the least liked idea was the first design including a three image merge. The runners up from the top picked choice was the middle design, including the three main individuals in the promo together but edited so they are overlapping. The most liked idea was the third sketch shown above, with a total of 7 out 15 people choosing this idea. The design included the three main characters standing side by side in a scenic area. Being the most liked idea, we will be using this as a base in creating the final poster.

Animals cutting to the beat demo

This was our demo of cutting to the beat and how we would try and incorporate that within our music promo. This is not actual footage we used within our final production it was just a draft of how to cut to the beat to our chosen song.

Poll on Ancillary ideas

This is a poll we did too see which idea we should develop. From the results we saw that the audience chose design 1 as 53% of the people we asked said it would be best to develop. This has allowed us to concentrate more of our time on idea 1 rather than the other 2.

Ancillary ideas

Ancillary ideas

Digipak ideas:

Our first idea consists of photo of the three people involved in the music promo with the title on top, this will be the first panel. The two panels besides that will be of the two different setting we will be filming in. It will be a photo of these settings. Within the digipak, the three panels will consist of each of the characters, one panel will consist of information about the artist.

Our second idea includes an overlaid image of all three individuals, with the title on top. The other two panels besides that is quite similar to our first idea of having the setting we will be filming in, however it will have within it, the character of the monkey running by in one, and the other will having the business man running by the woods. The middle top panel will just be a scenic shot. The other two panels on top will have specific information: the left panel will have the lyrics, while the far right panel will have information about the artist, quite similar to the first idea.

Finally, our final idea consists of the front cover having the vocalist with the title on top, he will be standing in a bleak landscape to dramatize the shot. The other two panels will form one picture of a landscape. The top middle panel will have the monkey and the business man side by side. The left and right panels will have similar information as said in our second idea.

Magazine ideas:

The first idea we thought of was splitting the frame into 5 panels, two of which will contain certain information as shown by the rough draft. The other panels will contain snippets of each individual: the monkey, the vocalist and the business man, this will be joined together to form as one face.

Our second idea is more simplistic. We will take photos of the monkey, the vocalist and the business man and overlay them on Photoshop. This will then be placed on top of a scenic background. The title will be on the top, while extra information will be below the magazine poster. The vocalist will be the person in front.

Our final idea, has an image of the three people shown on the promo standing by a fire, creating a silhouette. The middle of the frame will be lit by the fire, while the other edge dark. The main title will be on top, with some editing on Photoshop to edit the Illumination.

The designs will of course consist of the conventions associated with music performance posters and digipaks such as the name of the artist, the song title, a main image of the artist, logo of the record label, reviews, venues etc.

Ancillary task inspirations

Tuesday, 20 October 2015

Auditions - Zak Munton

We chose Zak to act as the business man in our promo because he is good at acting lost and keeping character through out his audition. He will be playing the businessman in our promo so he will have to act lost when he is in wood scenes as this is where you wouldn't expect to see him, which make for effective shots. Zak also looks like a business man so it'll make our actors look even more realistic.

Auditions - Liam Rushton

We chose Liam to be the animal in the KYKO music video as he is good at acting as if he is lost and confused by his surrounding environment. This is what we wanted to achieve with the person acting as it makes the animal look like he is not fitting in to the town location he will be in. This will make a good effect and will make the scenes more interesting to watch.

Auditions - Jamie Robinson

Jamie was auditioning for the role of KYKO in our music we did not give Jamie the part because he wasn't the best at lip syncing as he did not put enough emphasis into the lip syncing so it doesn't make it clear that he is lip syncing song. This is the main reason we didn't give him the part.

Auditions - Archie Gray

We didn't choose Archie to play the role of KYKO in our music promo task as he wasn't best prepared as he had to keep a copy of the script with him while doing his audition, and had to keep looking down and reading the lyrics off the sheet. We don't want this in our promo as it looks very unprofessional, and makes it look like it has been rushed and not thought out very well.

Auditions - Luke Crane

We didn't choose Luke to act in our music promo as he is unavailable to act on the days we have chosen to film. We also didn't think he fit our desired look for the animal he would act as so we did not give him the part.

Auditions - Terence Burns

We chose Terence to play the role of KYKO in our music promo. This is because he is very good at lip syncing to the song, he knew all the words to the song which shows he is determined to get the part as main vocalist actor. He also fits the appearance you would expect from KYKO with his individual look which will fit the theme we want to achieve with our promo.

When he was doing his acting he put a lot of emphasis into the lip syncing which looked very realistic when we added music to video. He didn't have to use a script unlike the other actors which looks more professional on film as he is always focused on the camera, which is what we want from our promo. This is why we chose Terence to act as KYKO in our music promo.

Costume choices

In our music video we have 3 actors all with different costumes; Zak is acting as a businessman. Liam as a animal and Terence as Kyko himself.

Zak's(Businessmen) Costume:
This is Zak's costume as he is playing a business man, we chose the suit as it is stereotypical business man outfit. It is formal so fits the narrative we are trying to create. Due to the narrative of trying to create confusion you don't expect a man In a wood to be wearing a suit.

Liam(Animal) Costume:
This costume fits our narrative as we have decided to have a monkey running in the town. This is fits the lyrical themes of our song about animals. This is going to create an opposite scenario and therefore create some humour and also deepen our narratives meaning.

Terence(Kyko) Costume:
Terence's costume is very simple, it is casual clothes which fits the conventions of the
indie pop genre as the artists usually wear very casual clothes. In addition it is easy to get hold of and makes our performance fit the genre we are trying to portray. This is Kyko, we are going to try and represent his casual style and therefore make our performance more professional

Music Promo Props

Chosen locations

For our town scenes we have chosen to use a multiple locations within the town of Stamford. The main location will be the high street as this area is often busy with many shoppers. This will work well for our storyline as we want to show that the man in the animal outfit is not fitting in with his surroundings and is different from everyone else, this will make the audience feel sympathy towards the character.

We have also chose to use locations in Stamford such as one of the car parks, as this will show that the animal is in a place where he doesn't belong. We have also chose to shoot in some of the housing estates in Stamford as these will be good at showing that the animal feels trapped as there are many dead ends and built up areas making the character feel trapped and alone, which will create sympathy for the animal.

For the scenes with the businessman we have chosen to use Dole Wood as this is a quiet wood that has many scenic paths and routes. With the wood being quiet it will make the shots more affective as it will make the audience feel sympathy for the businessman as he is all alone and looks lost. The wood is slightly overgrown which makes the scene with the businessman in more interesting as you wouldn't expect to see him in those locations.

For the scenes where the animal manages to escape the built up area on the bike, we have chosen to use country roads around the village Obthorpe. We have chosen to film here because of the landscape which has a peaceful feeling to it as there is very little traffic and nice landscape. This will make the audience know that the animal is happier here due to how he fits in more in this landscape.

For our actor who is doing the singing and the meeting of the business and animal, we have chosen to use a farm location as this will give us a lot of opportunities to get good shots. We have planned to shoot here at night so you cant see the background and keeps all the attention on the actor.  The flat level surface throughout the farm will gives a good area to perform on. For the time lapses we are going to shoot them in many various locations, to get the best shots to use in our final piece.
