Analysing music video portraying conventions

Analysing music video portraying conventions
Music Promo - Coldplay - The Scientist

This is the opening shot of the Coldplay song 'The Scientist' and it is an extreme close up that zooms out into a close up of Chris Martin, the lead singer of Coldplay. This is a very good shot for a music promo because it is portraying the lead singer in the music promo and this helps the audience get familiar with the main character in the band. This shot also adheres the Andrew Goodwin's Music video theory because he mentioned that record labels demand that many close ups of the artists are used and this is proven in this promo.

This clip is taken throughout the promo and is set in London as you can see on the sign in the background it has Camden written on it. This is effective from the director of the music promo because it is showing where the band are from and where they originated from. This is effective because it is informing people about the background of the band and proving that the band like to show their origins in their music promos.

This image is a shot of the editing techniques used and helps create the link with the lyrics as it says throughout the song 'I'm going back to the start' and the editing technique used is simple, it is in rewind and the narrative is used with the lead singer going back to the start of the song and having the end at the start and the start at the end. This is an example of amplification because it is following parts of the lyrics but the narrative doesn't always follow the lyrics.

The music promo is amplification because if you take a look at the two images below...

The music promo is amplification because at first read of the lyrics without watching the music promo it is portrayed through a breakup and that he is trying to win his girlfriend back. Although this is not the case and the narrative of the story is much more depressing. This is why the choice of amplification is effective because the director could create a narrative like this to pull on the heart strings of the audience to appeal to them. Also the colour of the car is effective because depression has connotations with the colour black and the use of a black car can help create messages to depression.
