Band biography
Beastie
Boys were an American hard-core rock band but then transformed into a hip hop band
from New York City, formed in 1981. For the majority of its career, the group
consisted of Michael "Mike D" Diamond, Adam "MCA" Yauch and
Adam "Ad-Rock" Horovitz. The song is a homage to but also a parody of
70s Crime Drama show called Dixie Dynamite. The video is presented in the
opening credits with the band members appearing as the show's protagonists.
Each band member is introduced as a fictional actor, and the names of the
characters are also given.
Intertextuality
used
The
intertextuality used in the two references were that Beastie boys used the car
chases from Dixie Dynamite although they took their own ideas and developed
them to make it more suit a music promo and to create humour but the way they
performed this in their music promo showed respect to the original. This
means the type of intertextuality that
Beastie Boys used was homage. The two texts are very similar because they both
show policemen and car chases and chases on foot which is seen in both texts.
Also there is a man seen in Dixie Dynamite falling down a hill on a motorbike,
in the Sabotage music promo they have incorporated this but have a man falling
off a bridge. The importance of this is nostalgia because it can help the
audience create links with what they have seen in the past.
Intertextual
references created
The intertextuality that has been used is
the visuals and this is clear from the pictures seen on the left. They have
used similar images but used a different setting to Dixie Dynamite. The
pictures that are seen on the left of the two men falling from a great height
is creating the link between the two texts. This is a privilege to the audience
because they can understand where the shot has come from and create links
between the two texts and this could then indicate nostalgia. The images of the
two cars are also important for creating references because they both represent
the car chases for the audience to create the links.
Why
intertextuality has been used
Intertextuality
has been used in this music promo in order to create nostalgia for the audience
meaning they will be able to gain a reference after seeing this music video.
The music video has certain clear links that will make the viewer easily able
to link the video to the 70s American drama if they knew about it.
The
band have used the links explained in the previous slide in order to create
tension throughout the music video. Using the links will also mean that the
audience will remember the music video as it will jog their memory to Dixy
Diner creating a link for the two media productions.
The
ideas that are created about the song can be linked with the music video, with
the fast pace and action packed footage that is seen on screen it can give the
impression that the band are also fast paced and ‘action packed’ like the song.
How
is intertextuality used?
From
doing our research we found that the music promo was homage and there is
evidence to back this up because the band members are representing characters
from Dixie Dynamite and almost mirror the shots and actions used. The location
is different but they try to incorporate the effects and visuals that Dixie
Dynamite used. By Beastie Boys following and following these visuals represents
homage but looking at the music promo we felt that the type of intertextuality
could possibly be Pastiche and this is because of the Mise-en-scene as the
characters and costume is quite humorous to the audience. Also the acting is
rather comical which could potentially be humorous to the audience. Although
the costume is used for the location in each, in Dixie Dynamite the costume is
more western and in the music promo ‘Sabotage’ the costume is more formal for
the city life. This is used to create hidden links for the audience to watch
the music promo multiple times to get the link with Dixie Dynamite.
