Music Promos - Conventions

Music Promos - Conventions

Camerawork
- Whole band shots (presents the product)
- Close ups, mainly singer and key performers (want to get close to band members, star access)
- Long shots and zooms and low angles for the performers - concerts, idolising
- Camera movement (lots and is dynamic to create excitement)

Editing
- Editing reflects tempo of the song and usually cuts to beat of the song
- Most shots are on the more significant performers
- Performance and narrative - integrated? Seperate? Is one more dominant?

Mise-en-scene
- Mise-en-scene reflects song lyrics
- Affected by the genre of music
- Settings might vary to add interest
- Props of the instruments - band roles and a sense of authenticity
- Costume links to genre and current fashion trends
- Lighting reflects genre and mood and atmosphere and also high key lighting (bright)

Narrative and Performance
- Live gig makes you feel like an audience member
- Narrative sometimes relates to the band
- Narrative is interpretation of the lyrics (known as illustration)
- Develop on key part of song (maybe one line of the lyrics)
- Ignore lyrics - known as disjunction

Technical conventions: Montage
A series of images cut together to form symbolic meaning
