Examples of Amplification, Disjuncture and Illustration
Example of amplification - Naughty Boy - La La La
The Naughty Boy music promo is amplification because the song has the lyrics 'I'm covering my ears like a kid and go La La La. This is amplification because this part of the video is showing a kid do that which represents part of the lyrics through the storyline. Then in reference to the other part of the song the kid seems to go on a journey with funny looking characters creating humour which is commonly used in music promos. The lyrics have no reference to these adults and a journey through mountains and this is why the music promo is amplification because they have used part of the lyrics for a main storyline but created a story and humour around the rest of the lyrics. They have used the main chorus for the kid performing the lyrics by covering his ears and miming the 'La La La' part of the lyrics.
Example of Disjuncture - Kings of Leon - Use Somebody
The Kings of Leon music promo portrays disjuncture because as an audience and reading the lyrics the audience would expect to see somebody helping someone or a person struggling because they need help, referring to the lyrics of 'I could really use somebody'. The music promo doesn't follow this expectation. The music promo manages to adhere conventions but the music promo portrays disjuncture. The reason this music promo adheres conventions is because the music promo follows the Andrew Goodwin theory of music promos always using close ups of the band members and this is effective because it gets the audience familiar with the band.
Example of Illustration - Owl City - Fireflies
Owl city's music promo of Fireflies is illustration because the lyrics reflect what us as the audience are seeing in the music promo. The lyrics start with 'You would not believe your eyes, if ten million fireflies, lit up the world as I fell asleep' and at this point a large number of fireflies are seen flying around the lead singer's bedroom. Again this music promo adheres the Andrew Goodwin theory by using close ups of the lead artist in the band and familiarises the audience with the members.
